About the Suzuki Method

Philosophy

The Suzuki Method of music education is based on the philosophy and teaching methods of Japanese violinist and educator, Dr Shinichi Suzuki. He believed in the great potential of music to enrich childrens’ lives, and the importance of developing the whole child through music education.

So whilst many Suzuki students do go on to become professional musicians, this is not the driving force behind the method. Instead, while learning to play the violin to the very best of their ability, children also learn many valuable life skills including self-confidence, concentration, perseverence, determination and the knowledge that if you work hard you can achieve anything.

An early start

Em violin.PNGWith the Suzuki method, children learn an instrument from an early age, usually around age 3 or 4, when new skills and concepts are absorbed with ease. That said, it is never too late to start learning, and older children and adults can also benefit from this approach.

Every child can

The Suzuki method is based on the belief that every child can learn to play an instrument, given the right environment. It isn't about being 'naturally musical' or 'musically talented', it's about having the opportunity, working hard and having fun in a positive and nurturing environment.
